You’ve Completed Your Application for Medicaid. Now What?

Congratulations on completing your application for Medicaid. Your application is being processed as quickly as possible but please be patient.

You will receive a letter in the mail that will tell you if you are qualified for Medicaid or other Illinois state benefits.

If you do not get a letter within 30 days, you can call and check the status of your application.

Directions to check the status of your application:

If you applied directly to Medicaid through ABE or the call center, you can check the status of your application by calling 1-800-843-6154 and selecting the following prompts:

  • DIAL 1 for English or DIAL 2 for Spanish
  • DIAL 1 for questions on Cash, SNAP benefits or Medicaid
  • DIAL 4 to apply or for general information
  • DIAL 3 if you are a new customer or wish to start a new application
  • DIAL 1 for technical issues with abe.illinois.gov

What Should You Do if You Were Told Your Healthcare.gov Application was Being Referred to Medicaid?

If you applied for health coverage through Healthcare.gov and you were told you or someone in your family was likely eligible for Medicaid, the State of Illinois is in the process of receiving your application information and processing it.   You will get a notice in the mail with your eligibility determination – please be patient.

If you think you were referred to Medicaid in error, we recommend you restart the process by clicking here  to see if you are likely eligible for financial assistance through the Marketplace.  If the tool refers you to the Marketplace, you should create a brand new Marketplace account with a different email address and different user name and re-apply under the new Marketplace account.  You may keep the same password.

You can also call the Help Desk at (866)311-1119 or work with a local Navigator to re-apply. Click here to find a Navigator near you.

When Does Medicaid Coverage Start?

If you applied for health coverage through Healthcare.gov and you were told you or someone in your family was likely eligible for Medicaid, the State of Illinois is in the process of receiving your application information.   You don’t have to do anything. The state will process your application from the Marketplace. Or you can apply for Medicaid directly by clicking here or by phone at 1-800-843-6154 if you have not already.  You will get a notice in the mail with your eligibility determination – please be patient.

If you are approved for Medicaid, you will have coverage for any unpaid bills for Medicaid-covered services by a Medicaid provider during the month when your coverage starts — even if you don’t get your Medicaid card until the following month.   Medicaid does not reimburse for medical bills that you pay while your application is pending.  For a list of Medicaid providers, go to www.enrollhfs.illinois.gov.
